Notes
What they are
Notes are freeform jottings attached to a document. Where annotations point at a specific passage, notes float free: reminders, loose plot threads, research scraps, a line of dialogue you want to use somewhere, or anything you want to keep close to the document without putting it in the document. They are plain text, they live outside the project text, and they never affect your word count or normal reading exports. Every document keeps its own notes, so thoughts about one chapter stay with that chapter.
Creating a note
Open the context panel on the right side of the editor. Notes is the first tab, and at its top sits a small text box inviting you to jot a note. Type your thought and press Enter to save it. To add a line break inside the note, press Shift + Enter instead. On smaller screens, a Save note button appears below the box. A note can hold up to a thousand characters. Notes are deliberately kept short. If a thought outgrows that, it may deserve a document of its own.
The notes list
Saved notes appear below the text box, newest first. Longer notes show only their first few lines. Choose Show more to read the rest or Show less to fold the note again. Once you have five or more notes, a search box appears above the list and filters notes as you type.
Editing and deleting
Each note has two small controls. The pencil opens it for editing. Enter saves, Shift + Enter adds a line break, and Cancel discards the edit. The trash button deletes the note immediately without asking for confirmation. A brief message appears with an Undo button that brings the note back. A restored note returns at the top of the list.
Good to know
- Each note holds up to 1,000 characters, and a document can carry up to 100 notes.
- Notes stay out of everything that involves the project text: they are not counted and are not included in ordinary reading exports.
- Notes are not anchored to the text. If you want a remark tied to a specific sentence or passage, use an annotation instead.
- Notes cannot be added or changed in an archived project. Unarchive the project first.
