Autosave

Spleen saves your writing automatically while you work. There is no traditional save button because saving is meant to be part of the writing flow, not a separate task you have to remember.

How autosave works

As you type and edit, Spleen waits briefly and then saves the current document. This avoids saving after every single keystroke while still keeping recent work protected.

When changes are saved

Most changes are saved shortly after you stop typing. Moving between documents or leaving the workspace also gives Spleen a chance to finish saving pending changes.

Spleen waits about one second after a content change before autosaving. When you switch documents or leave the project, Spleen first tries to finish any pending save. If that save cannot complete, the navigation is stopped or Spleen asks you whether you want to leave anyway.

While you are still typing

If you keep typing, Spleen continues treating the document as active work. Autosave stays out of the way rather than interrupting each sentence.

If you go offline

When your browser detects that you are offline, Spleen shows You’re offline. Reconnect to save your work. at the top of the workspace. The notice disappears when your connection returns.

Your current text stays in the open editor, but Spleen cannot save new changes while you are offline. Keep writing if you want to, and reconnect before you finish for the day so the document is saved.

If saving fails

If a save cannot be completed, Spleen shows feedback so you know something went wrong. Your unsaved changes remain in the editor rather than being silently discarded.

When saving fails, the editor header shows Couldn’t save and the document keeps its unsaved changes. The status is not asking you to do anything: keep writing, and Spleen keeps trying. Spleen also holds your unsaved text in this browser as you write, so opening the document again later can bring it back.

If you try to leave the project while a save problem is still present, Spleen opens This project isn’t ready to close with Stay, Leave without saving, and Retry actions.

Why there is no save button

A save button asks the writer to become the file manager. Autosave keeps the focus on writing and lets Spleen handle the background work.
