Atmosphere

Atmosphere lets you play a quiet background stream while you write. It is intended as a simple concentration aid rather than a full music player, so its controls stay compact.

Opening Atmosphere

On desktop, the Atmosphere button is always available in the project header beside project search. When Zen Mode is available, Atmosphere sits between the search and Zen Mode buttons. Select it to open the controls. There is no setting for showing, hiding, or pinning the button.

The button shows a play icon while Atmosphere is idle, a loading indicator while a stream connects, and a stop icon while it is playing. When the controls are open, the button becomes a close icon.

Atmosphere is not available on smaller screens.

Choosing a stream

Use the stream menu to select one of the available stations. Selecting a different station stops the current stream and does not start the new one automatically. Choose the play button when you are ready to listen.

The available streams are chosen to suit quiet writing sessions, but each one has its own character. Some may work better for close editing, while others may be more useful when drafting for a longer period.

Playing and stopping audio

Use the play button to begin streaming. Once playback has started, the same control becomes a stop button. A live stream has no saved position to pause and resume, so starting again reconnects to the selected station.

Atmosphere belongs to the writing workspace rather than to an individual document. Moving between documents does not require you to restart the stream.

Volume control

Use the slider to set a comfortable background level. The current percentage is shown beside it. Spleen remembers the selected station and volume on this device.

A lower volume usually works best when the stream is meant to support concentration rather than compete with the text in front of you.

Leaving the editor and using Zen Mode

When you leave the editor while a stream is playing, Atmosphere lowers the volume so the audio becomes less prominent outside the writing space. Returning to the editor restores the level you chose.

Entering Zen Mode lowers the stream further. The Atmosphere button moves into the small bar at the top of the Zen view, so you can still open the controls or stop playback. Leaving Zen Mode restores the normal editor level.

When a stream does not work

Atmosphere uses external radio streams, and an individual station may occasionally be unavailable or fail to start. This can happen because the station is temporarily offline, has changed its stream address, or is experiencing a connection problem.

When playback fails, try another stream. If the same station continues to be unavailable, you can report it so the stream list can be checked and updated.
