Exporting a Project

Exporting creates a file outside Spleen from the project you are working on. The project remains in Spleen after export; the exported file is a copy in the selected format.

Exporting the full project

A normal project export uses the project’s current writing structure and content. The exported file follows the order of writing sections and documents as they appear in the project sidebar.

PDF, EPUB, and HTML include the project title, optional subtitle, and author byline on a title page. Markdown includes the project title but not the subtitle or byline. Spleen Archive preserves the saved subtitle and author or pen name for later import.

PDF, EPUB, HTML, and Markdown exports always include the full writing tree that is still in the book. You cannot select only certain writing sections or documents. Material in Archive or Trash is left out. A Spleen Archive also includes both bins, research, notes, annotations, and snapshots, but not the book cover, share links, or paragraph indentation setting.

Exporting from project actions

From the projects overview, open the actions menu for the project and choose Export. Leave Include table of contents selected or clear it, then choose PDF, EPUB, HTML, Markdown, or Spleen Archive. The choice affects PDF and HTML only. This is useful when you want to export a project without opening it first.

Exporting from inside the editor

From inside the writing workspace on a larger screen, open Project actions in the project sidebar footer and choose Export. Set Include table of contents, then choose PDF, EPUB, HTML, Markdown, or Spleen Archive. On a smaller screen, Export opens a separate screen with the same setting and formats. Use Back to return to the project actions. This is useful when you are already reviewing the project and want to export it without returning to the projects overview.

Choosing a format

Choose the format that matches what you want to do next: PDF for fixed reading or printing, EPUB for ebook reading, HTML for use in a web browser, Markdown for simple text tools, or Spleen Archive for backup and later import.

What happens after export

After export, Spleen prepares a downloadable file. For a single project, this may be one file. For multiple projects, the exported files may be collected into a single archive.

For a single project, choosing an export format starts the download immediately. Spleen does not show a separate progress message or confirmation. If the file cannot be created, the browser shows an error page, such as Project not found or a message that you do not have permission.

Checking the exported file

Open the exported file before sending, printing, or archiving it. Check the title, subtitle, author byline, order, headings, formatting, and whether any draft material accidentally remained in the project. Not every format displays every project detail, so use the format-specific guidance above when checking Markdown or Spleen Archive files.
